Stamping out visceral fat is essential to sustaining a long and healthy life because it wraps around organs such as the liver, stomach, kidneys, and intestines. Having high levels of visceral fat is linked to an increased risk of chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Thankfully, much can be done to shrink the harmful belly fat.

What’s more, it doesn’t take long to observe the beneficial effects.

That’s the encouraging conclusion of a study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research.

The study investigated the anti-obesity effects of bergamot phytosome supplementation.

Bergamot Phytosome is a standardised extract from Bergamot, also known as Citrus bergamia Risso et Poiteau, a small tree cultivated along the Ionian coast of the Calabria region in Southern Italy.

A total of 64 participants were randomised into two groups for 12 weeks: a supplemented group (33 individuals receiving 500 mg of bergamot phytosome, two daily tablets) and placebo group (31 subjects, two daily tablets).

The parameters of visceral fat, total and LDL-cholesterol were “significantly decreased” in the bergamot phytosome group, but not in the placebo group, the researchers found.

Like visceral fat, LDL cholesterol is a fatty substance that is a precursor to heart disease.

What’s more, visceral fat reduction began within 30 days of consuming bergamot phytosome, the researchers noted.

“In conclusion, this clinical study gives evidence that bergamot phytosome provides beneficial effects, such as decrease of VAT [visceral fat] and modulation of metabolic alterations, after just 30 days of supplementation, resulting in a very promising protection of cardiovascular health.”

What else can be done to beat the belly fat?

According to Holland and Barrett, you should stay clear of processed sugars and complex carbohydrates.

“Instead, try and include plenty of soluble fibre foods such as flax seeds, avocados, blackberries, and Brussels sprouts,” advises the health body.

“This is because soluble fibre absorbs water and forms a gel that helps slow down food as it passes through your digestive system.”

In addition to eating a healthy diet, exercise is crucial to keeping the belly fat at bay.

According to Bupa, any form of exercise for at least 30 minutes a day is good for you.

“Use every opportunity to become fit whether you are at home, at work or with friends. This could include cycling to work or getting off the bus or train one or two stops early,” says the health body.

As the health body notes, there are lots of types of exercise you can try.

“But combining resistance (strength) exercise and cardiovascular exercise is ideal.”

According to the NHS, muscle strength is necessary in order to build and maintain strong bones so that we can easily do everyday tasks.

“It also regulates blood sugar and blood pressure and helps us to maintain a healthy weight,” explains the health body.

Strength exercises include:

  • Yoga, tai chi or Pilates
  • Lifting weights
  • Using resistance gym equipment
  • Sit-ups, push-ups, lunges or squats.
