Heart attacks are serious medical emergencies that require immediate attention from a doctor. You could be at risk of a deadly heart attack – or myocardial infarction – if you develop unexplained bad breath, it’s been claimed.
Heart attacks are caused by a lack of blood reaching the heart.
Without enough blood, the heart could become seriously damaged – and it may even be life-threatening.
A heart attack could also be a symptom of coronary heart disease, which is where fatty deposits build up in the arteries, which limits the amount of blood reaching the heart.
One of the key warning signs of heart disease, and subsequently a heart attack, is bad breath.
Bad breath – or halitosis – is a sign of periodontitis, which is another name for gum disease.
Gum disease is a marker for heart disease, scientists have revealed.
Periodontitis is caused by a build-up of bacteria in the mouth. These bacteria can enter the bloodstream and caused inflammation in the blood vessels.
Inflamed blood vessels may subsequently lead to heart disease.

“The state of your oral health can be a good predictor of the state of your cardiovascular health,” said Lancaster University’s Adam Taylor.
He wrote for The Conversation: “The mouth is full of bacteria, both good and bad.
“The ‘bad’ bacteria can enter the bloodstream from the mouth and cause inflammation in the blood vessels, which can lead to cardiovascular disease.
“Studies have shown that tooth loss and inflamed gums [periodontitis] are markers of heart disease.”
But just because you have gum disease, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re about to have a heart attack.
It’s a very common condition that affects most people to some degree.
Common signs of the disease include having particularly swollen or sore gums, bad breath, or an unpleasant taste in the mouth.
Speak to a dentist if you’re worried about the signs of gum disease.
Meanwhile, the most common heart attack signs include severe chest pain, having a radiating pain in your arm, and suddenly feeling very dizzy.
But you can lower your risk of a heart attack by making some small diet or lifestyle changes.
Eating a healthy, balanced diet will lower your chances of fatty deposits in your arteries.
